Campo Felice and Altopiano delle Rocche
The Altopiano delle Rocche, in the province of L’Aquila, is a system of karst plateaus located between 1,200 and 1,400 metres above sea level between the Sirente and Velino ranges, the highest in the central Apennines after Gran Sasso. The plateau is guarded by numerous peaks – Monte Rotondo, Monte Cagno, Monte Ocre and Cefalone – all over 2000 metres.
It is an ideal location for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, ski touring and alpine skiing in winter, for wonderful walks and bicycle and horseback excursions in other seasons of the year through beech forests and unspoilt, surprising landscapes.
The Altopiano delle Rocche is tinged with white in May, not because of the late snow but because of the spontaneous flowering of the narcissus. In honour of this splendid flower and to celebrate the arrival of the fine season, a splendid parade of flowered floats is organised in Rocca di Mezzo.
Between Ovindoli and Rocca Di Mezzo Federico Fellini shot “La Strada” with Giulietta Masina and Antony Queen, while Rocca Di Cambio is the location for “The Return of Don Camillo”.
